NRS of Ocean County Holds First Prom

May 2007

New Road School of Ocean County held their first prom on May 18, 2007 at the East Dover Fire House in Toms River. All high school students were invited to attend.

The prom had a Hawaiian theme. The fire house was magically transformed into a tropical island. Each attendee received a lei upon entering the room. Palm trees were strategically placed around the room along with other Hawaiian decorations. The tables were covered with brightly colored table cloths, palm tree centerpieces and palm leaves filled with snacks. Balloons shaped like hibiscus flowers and hula dancers filled the room. We even had a picture booth consisting of totem poles covered by a Hawaiian thatched umbrella!

AJH Entertainment provided the emcee and music.  The talented emcee got everyone out of their chairs and dancing. For those that did not dance, he gave dance lessons. We even had the opportunity to enter a “time machine” and go back in time, musically, that is. While most of the teachers remembered the music, none of the students had ever heard most of the tunes.

Prizes were awarded to many of those on the dance floor.  Lunch consisted of spare ribs, dumplings, rice, egg rolls, vegetable rolls, chicken and broccoli, followed by an ocean themed cake.

It was hard to tell who had more fun, the staff or the students! We hope that this is just the first of many more proms to be held for our Ocean County New Road School high school students.
