Students at New Road of Ocean County Visit Student Health Awareness Center

The students of New Road School in Lakewood had the opportunity to visit CentraState Healthcare Systems “Student Health Awareness Center” on February 1, 2008. The center provides an interactive learning experience for kids. Approximately 25 students attended the event. The programs are taught through trained health educators using exhibits with props, attention-grabbing audio-visual materials and progressive instructional models to capture student’s attention and interest.

“Adventures to Health” presented a high-tech wonderland for the kids to discover the wonders of the human body. Initially, each student stepped into the “Scan Me” station where height, weight and body mass index are calculated. Then, they were off and running to 17 other stations covering topics such as germs and how they are spread, dental health, endurance and stamina, good posture, safety in and out of the home and drug and alcohol prevention. The hands-on approach provided an engaging learning experience for all who attended.

The Communication Stations allowed the kids to sample different ways to communicate using touch, sound and sight. They also got to see their names in Braille and sign language. The “Healthy Highway Drive-Thru” sent children through a simulated drive-thru that allowed them to choose balanced meals from a touch-screen menu. Nutritional results were then calculated to teach children the importance of making healthy choices according to nutritional guidelines. “Organ-Ize Me”, “Play It Safe” and “Pedal Power” were some of the other interactive stations available for the kids.

The program proved to be an invaluable resource for our children in their own “Adventure to Health.”
