Ocean county fire prevention week

June 11, 2009

When the New Road School of Ocean County wanted to educate their students for fire prevention week they turned to staff member Ms. Dawn Williams. Ms. Williams is a teaching assistant for New Road School who has served 10 years as a volunteer firefighter for the Adelphia Fire Company 19-2, in Howell, New Jersey

Ms. Williams brought the students the full firefighter’s uniform called “Turn Out Gear” for the students to try on – helmets, jackets, bunker pants, boots and ear gloves. The students were shown what each piece of equipment was used for and, to the delight of all our students, were allowed to try the gear on.

The students were given fire prevention tips to be used at home such as keeping things away from electrical outlets and lamps and to not leave candles burning unattended. In the event of a fire the students were shown how to dial “911” and what to say on the phone. They were also told to hang a sheet out the window if help is needed to escape from the fire or to alert firefighters to their presence.

Each student was asked if they knew their family safety plan and were taught the idea of a meeting place outside the home for the family to meet after escaping the home.

To conclude their lesson, each student received a handbook on fire safety, a fire hat, firefighter badges, pencils and bookmarks to remind them of what they had learned about fire prevention and safety. The children had a wonderful time but, most important, the children learned how to remain safe and what to do if there is a fire in their home. Thank you, Ms. Williams, for sharing your important fire prevention knowledge with us!
