Ocean School Promotes Literacy
November 30, 2008
During the week of November 10, 2008, New Road School of Ocean focused on promoting reading with its annual Scholastic book fair. Two special events were held to promote reading and literacy in our students: “Breakfast, Bus Drivers and Books” and a Grandparent’s Day. The book fair was also open during teacher - parent conferences so parents could shop the book fair with their children.
For “Breakfast, Bus Drivers and Books” our students’ bus drivers were welcomed into the school for a light breakfast with our students. After breakfast they were given the opportunity to view the books available at the book fair and to read books with the students. On Grandparents’ Day students’ grandparents were invited to assist their grandchildren in creating Thanksgiving crafts and pilgrim door hangers. After crafts each student had the chance to walk through the book fair with their grandparents and to select books to purchase.
Incorporating students’ families and community members into promoting literacy increased the students’ interest in the book fair and encouraged the students to read more. A good time was had by all and we look forward to finding more ways to encourage our students to read in the future!
