Veteran’s Day Celebration at Ocean County

November 30, 2008

To celebrate Veteran’s Day and to teach the importance of what our veterans have done for this country, veterans from the American Legion Post in Lakewood, New Jersey were invited to speak to the high school students at New Road School of Ocean this past November. The program began with a welcome and thank you to the veterans for coming to share this special day with us.

To honor the veterans and to thank them for their service to our great country, the high school students at New Road prepared a collage of portraits of soldiers. The pictures covered the time period from the Revolutionary War of 1775 to the War in Iraq. The collage was unveiled during the veterans’ visit. Student Danielle Gizzi read the Soldier’s Creed during the unveiling.

Soldier’s Creed
I am an American Soldier.
I am a Warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values.

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.
I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.
I am an American Soldier.

After the soldier’s creed was read the veterans spoke to the audience re-telling stories of their war years. They played a short video tape depicting the war years and presented an American flag to each student to commemorate the day.

In closing, Christian Campbell read a statement thanking the veterans for their service to our country and an honorary plaque was presented to the veterans from the school.
