NRS of Ocean County Holds Curriculum Fair and Awards Ceremony
June 05, 2007
On June 5, 2007, an exhibit of student work was displayed prior to our end of year award ceremony. Parents of New Road students in Ocean County were treated to an impressive display of the work that students completed throughout the school year. The student work focused on the areas of science, history, photography, writing and art.
This fair was a year long program enthusiastically undertaken by the students and staff with an environmental theme. In September of 2006 each class chose a project for their classroom to pursue. Examples included cleaning and painting water drains to remind people to keep our water clean, assembling and filling bird feeders to feed the birds during the winter season and donating bird seed to Island Beach State Park. Some students chose to plant flowers and shrubs on the New Road School campus to enhance the environment. Other students volunteered time at Harbor House, a local shelter, to help beautify the grounds.
The largest undertaking was cleaning Applegate Creek at Cattus Island State Park, NJ. Students created habitats for animals and planted sea grass on the sand dunes to help save our beaches. Pictures were taken at all sites and display boards were created to illustrate to parents what was accomplished and why students had chosen each project.
Science students were assigned a science project. They were asked to find a problem, form a hypothesis, experiment and then write about their results and form a conclusion. Experiments included a volcano, a computer, a water wheel and other creative projects.
Photography from the S.E.E. exhibit (Special Eyes on the Environment), along with a written compilation of students’ thoughts and emotions while taking the pictures, were also displayed. This provided insight into each student’s purpose and meaning behind the picture.
History came alive for our high school students by creating a re-enactment of the Civil War on a small scale display board. Students researched the Civil War and wrote about the battles and heroes they encountered.
Once parents and visitors had the opportunity to view the incredible products of a year of hard work the awards ceremony began. To a huge round of applause, our graduates, Edmond S. and Dan R., received high school diplomas. Michael H., Nicholas F. and Zach J. received eighth grade diplomas signifying their move from middle school to high school. Other awards were presented for outstanding occupational therapy student, counseling student, reading progress, math progress and many others to honor our hard working students. The prestigious Director’s Award was presented to Zach M. for his accomplishments throughout the last year.
The entire event was a fantastic reminder of what our students can accomplish and the reminder of an industrious school year.
