New Road School of Parlin

Teacher working one-on-one with student - special education private school in Parlin NJ

The New Road School of Parlin is a New Jersey Approved Private School for Students with Disabilities ages 5 to 21 who have learning, language and social challenges.

New Road School of Parlin currently serves approximately 100 students. Our program is housed in a 32,000-square-foot building with ample classrooms, therapy offices, common areas, and outdoor play spaces, all tailored to meet the individual needs of our students.

The New Road School of Parlin, originally located in Highland Park, was the first of the New Road Schools, and is the birthplace of our unique academic instructional model. This model, carefully developed over three decades, provides for the accurate assessment of each student's strengths and capabilities, and the development of an individualized curriculum and one-on-one tutorial-based instruction that accommodates his or her learning styles. Small group instruction is also used to develop social interaction.

Each students' individual curriculum is adapted as goals and objectives are reached - with plenty of praise for successes - to ensure regular progress and growth in academic, social, independent living, and career readiness skills.

Classrooms size rarely exceeds 10 students, and we encourage strong and trusting relationships with teachers, therapists, and aides. Our staff turnover is remarkably low, and many of our teachers have been with us for 20 or more years. Their caring support is balanced with high expectations and accountability to build confidence, competence, and self-motivation, and propel student growth.

This model is now used consistently at all New Road Schools, and proving everyday that New Road Schools students learn and to grow towards becoming independent and productive members of their communities.

A key area of concern for our younger learners is reading. As each child's curriculum is developed, our teachers have more than a dozen effective reading programs available to them, including Wilson and Orton-Gillingham programs.

Older students are introduced to a departmental, less self-contained, academic experience, in which they have personal lockers, have a homeroom, move from classroom to classroom, and learn to navigate their learning experience more independently.

The New Road School of Parlin, like other New Road Schools, operates under a Micro-community concept - ours is New Roads Square. Our school community functions as a miniature town complete with its own town center.
