Extended School Year

ESY is recommended for students to earn academic credits, to make up missed work, or to retain learning that might be lost over a long summer vacation.

The consistency of academic learning that is maintained by having students stay in school when they would otherwise not be engaged in school over the summer break allows for continued progress and immersion in the educational curriculum.

Behaviorally and emotionally, students benefit from participating in ESY because the structure and uniformity of the program help them sustain levels of success and self-discipline that may not be required of them outside the school environment. By adhering to the same rules and behavioral model in summer that is followed during the regular school year, students experience a smoother transition back to school in the fall, and the recoupment time for previously learned skills and content are minimized.

While not all students participate in the ESY program, most are recommended for it by the New Road School and their local district's Child Study Teams. While our ESY program follows and advances the regular curriculum, students also enjoy a variety of field trips and fun activities in the summer months to keep them actively engaged and interested in learning.
