Behavioral Supports

The New Road Schools are committed to providing a positive school environment that heightens students' potential for success in school.

Students making holidat decorationsWe also share the philosophy that our students' positive behavior in school is a critical skill that will serve them well as they become accountable and productive members of their communities.

Our teachers help our students build confidence, competence, motivation, and high self-esteem, the attitudes that are most conducive to learning.

Teachers reward students for positive behaviors and academic achievement through a variety of rewards and incentives designed to promote those behaviors, while discouraging negative behaviors and attitudes. This system regularly rewards students for appropriate actions and the application of learned skills. It also positively impacts students who may be having difficulties in this area, as they see their fellow students earning rewards for positive, healthy behaviors and are motivated to do the same.

Staff or consulting Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), working collaboratively with social work staff, teachers and families, are available to develop specific and targeted behavior plans (Behavior Intervention Plan, "BIP") for students whenever necessary.

All New Road Schools teachers are trained in CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) and behavior management programs, with the goal of minimizing the reliance on counseling and maximizing feelings of self-efficacy and self-management.
